Monte de San Pedro
The Monte de San Pedro is a good example of a large leisure zone recovered for
the city. This whole area of the city has been revitalised over the last few years
with new residential zones, shopping centres and such building projects as the
Promenade
and the Millennium, and the Monte de San Pedro is the icing on the cake of
a great transformation.
The area in the past was abandoned for various historical reasons and is now
a leisure zone for the whole city and its surroundings.
The land in the past was military although when the Armed Forces handed it
over the City Council of La Coruña was able to start building. The first
phase is now complete although it is an ongoing project of recovery
and gardens to quickly become a Municipal Park.
The
is made up of a large area of uneven surface and exceptional views of the city
of La Coruña and the coast line from San Adrián and the Sisargas
Islands to the west all the way to the Prior and Prioriño headlands to
the northwest.
The shoreline is especially noteworthy with its characteristic rocky
aspect, its flora and its fauna. Gorse and heather, yellow and pink, among
other coastal species including some indigenous plants which thrive in this
habitat. Above them, a multitude
of small birds such as whitethroats, goldfinches and linnets, bringing colour
and life to the park.
The previous military use of the land (due to its strategic position overlooking
the entrance to the inlet of La Coruña) has left its mark with various
interesting constructions - underground passageways, barracks, lookout
turrets and above all the spectacular coastal cannons, which have been
recovered as historical heritage and will no doubt affect future generations
as they have done with past ones.
At the foot of the park lies the city. For most people, observing the city
from up here is a new view, never seen before. Visitors can see the whole city
and place Orzán Bay, the Museum of Mankind, the Aquarium and
the Tower of Hercules, not to mention a host of other emblematic points
in La Coruña.
The park is completed by pathways, gardens, fixtures, pools and information
panels - all the necessary infrastructure to make your visit a pleasant and
lasting experience.
The represents
the recovery of a large leisure space for people to enjoy, part of a series
of plans to make life in the city more enjoyable for both locals and visitors.
