A new value for left-overs
Cities use up enormous amounts of resources in the form of articles for consumption.
A large part of these resources are lost because of the "use and throw
away" system. This form of consumption, often called "welfare"
or "quality of life", generates a large amount of residue and
waste.
A city like La Coruña, with roughly 248,000 inhabitants, produces over
300 tons of waste per day (according to the average used in the National
Urban Waste Plan, i.e. 1.2 kg per person per day). In the past all this
waste was taken to a landfill, which was taking our society towards a situation
of non-sustainability.
The Environmental Department of the City Council of La Coruña
therefore undertook a project to take on waste treatment with a new philosophy,
the same policy that is guiding all municipal policies towards sustainability.
And so the new Waste Treatment Plan for La Coruña was
born, based on the idea that reusing and recycling are essential if we want
toconserve our resources. With this plan we will value leftovers much more through
a cultural process we are an active part in, avant garde technology and maximum
respect for nature and the environment.
From the waste bin at home to the
Waste Treatment Plant at Nostián, from waste collection points to
recylcing plants - not only has the city sealed a landfill and opened a new
park, but it also contributes to the planet's sustainability by recovering
raw material.
