Recovery of Bens landfill
La Coruña is like a balcony onto the ocean, although for almost twenty
years one of its seafronts had a somewhat dark function. From the beginning of
the 1980's the sides of the Monte
de Bens were a deposit for waste from the city and the surrounding area
- a landfill.
The accumulation of waste reached its limit on 10 September 1996 when it collapsed.
Waste was spread out towards the little port of O
Portiño . The news was reported internationally and waste treatment
became the headlines. Work started immediately to avoid the contamination spreading,
by installing barriers and clearing up. The 100,000 tons of waste had to be
moved.
From that moment on, waste treatment in the city underwent a radical change.
The accident at Bens gave rise to a serious and intense thought process, which
resulted in a new philosophy and a totally different way of looking at the problem
- modern and committed to conserving the environment. The key to the
future from that time on has been sustainability. The Waste
Treatment Plan of La Coruña was born.
The sealing and regeneration of the landfill started immediately, and thus
it was turned into a huge park for people to enjoy. The park was officially
opened on 5 June 2001, coinciding with World
Environment Day.
