 Material Used

The great effort made by the Council in endowing the city with containers saw at the same time the modernising of the material used for waste collection. The company uses 37 trucks, organised to cover the service.

In order to provide a better service, 15 trucks have double compartments, and so the two types of contaier can be emptied into the same truck. Their capacity is between 20 and 23 cubic metres, of which two thirds (c. 13 to 15 cubic metres) is for inorganic waste, which take up more space, and the rest for organic waste. This tyoe of truck is always used in industrial park collection.

The other trucks are smaller, holding between 8 and 12 cubic metres, and running two or three routes.

One truck is solely for colelcting special kinds of waste, such as furniture and household goods.

There are also three trucks to wash containers. The outside of the container is first washed by hand and then the truck automatically washes the inside. This avoids the accumulation of odours and remains.

Each truck runs half a route every day. Cleaning takes place at night from Sunday to Thursday, and so each containre is washed approximately every 24 days. Some areas are cleaned more frequently, especially areas such as public squares or markets. There are almost 200,000 washing actions per year.
