A Waste Plan lile La Coruña's is based on community involvement.
The first and most important step is taken in each and every home, and so each
one of us is a waste manager, the starting point for the development of the whole
plan.
The first selection takes place in the eco-rubbish bin. During
the first phase of the plan, the Council distributed over 90,000 bins, one for
each family in the city, to make it easier to separate.
The bin has two different compartments, for different kinds of waste. Why
should we separate? Almost half of our household waste, 44 % in weight,
is organic material. It is therefore most important to have a separate bag for
this.
remains of food such as bread, fruit, vegetables, fish bones, bones in general,
egg shells, etc. Used nappies and food past the sell by date are too, without
the packaging.
Other items should be placed in the other compartment, for . For example, tins, cardboard, plastic etc.
Remember that there are different
containers for glass and paper and these too should be separated.
The eco-rubbish bin is a very useful tool for this task, although
it is not essential and any bag (better if it is recyclable) can be used.
Waste bags are then taken down to the containers in the street. The two types
of container are together - the green one, the smaller of the two, is
for . Organic waste
weighs more but takes up less room. The container can be identified by the words
on it "Deposita aquí solo tus restos de alimentos" (Only
for Organic Waste). It is important to select waste correctly as the quality
of the end product (compost) depends on this.
The large container is for .
You can differentiate it from the organic one by its yellow top.
