City waste plan
Cities are great consumers of goods. Many resources are lost through using disposable
products - this is often known as "quality of life" although
it generates a large amount of waste.
A city like La Coruña, with roughly 248,000 inhabitants, would produce
over 300 tons of waste per day (according to the average of 1.2 Kg per person
per day, as stated in the National City Waste Plan). Up till recently all
this waste was sent to a landfill, which was driving our city towards a situation
of unsustainability.
A new plan was therefore conceived in the Environmental Department
of the City Council of La Coruña, to take on waste with a new
philosophy, the same philosophy that directs all municipal policies towards
sustainability.
Thus was the La Coruña Waste Treatment Plan born, based
on the idea that reusing and recycling are vital if we want to preserve our
resources. We give a new value to our left-overs through a cultural process
we all take part in, state-of-the-art technology and a great respect for nature
and the environment.
From the eco-rubbish bin to the Waste
Treatment Plant of Nostián, from the waste collection points to the
recycling plants ... not only has the city closed a landfill and opened a park
in its place, it has also contributed to global sustainability with the recovery
of raw materials.
