 the Aalborg Charter

The charter for sustainability in European cities, knnown as the "Aalborg Charter", was signed in Denmark by 80 European local authorities after the European Congress on Sustainable Cities and Towns, held from 24 to 27 May 1994. The Aalborg Charter was the beginning of the European Campaign for Sustainable Cities and Towns.

Any local authority (or group of authorities) can join the campaign and sign the Charter. This commits the local authority to participate in the Local Agenda 21 process, whose aim is to create and put into practice a local sustainability action plan.

La Coruña has approved and signed the Aalborg Charter. At present our city is designing and taking the first steps towards our own Local Agenda 21.
